Understanding and Explaining Game Feel to Novice Game Designers.

The Honours Project

This project was apart of my honours degree researching into pedagogy (the study of teaching) for game design. With research for game design scarce and unconsolidated, this project strived to make an easy to understand book of game design techniques along with an open source game exemplifying the techniques in the book.

The Unnamed Game

The game created, The Unnamed Game, is a 3-minute, first-person, guessing game where players try to figure out who they are and survive for as long as possible. longer the player lasts, the more hints are revealed to the player, rewarding their skill.

The game was developed using the Javascript framework, A-Frame with the assets being created in Maya, Blender and Substance Painter.

Early Concept

Earlier concept was to make interactive 3D dioramas using QR codes hidden around Curtin’s campus. These dioramas would tell the story of Ned Kelly’s life. After viewing one, the viewer is asked if they think of Ned Kelly as a hero or villain. Depending on the viewers response, the next diorama will change to contradict the viewers opinion (making the story sympathise or vilify Ned Kelly’s actions).
